Most people, including yourself, probably want to lose weight and lose it fast. This leads most people to make a drastic reduction in their daily caloric intake. This is a major no-no in weight loss, and can lead to hindered progress, as well as weight gain.

"It would make sense to stop eating [when you are trying to lose weight], but it actually works in the opposite way," says Kimberly Lummus, MS, RD, Texas Dietetic Association media representative and public relations coordinator at the Austin Dietetic Association in Austin, Texas

The primary factor in losing weight is to create a caloric deficit. This is achieved by consuming fewer calories than you expend. If this intake goes too low, your body will enter starvation mode, Lummus said. Your body will end up storing fat instead of burning it, because it doesn't know when it will receive nutrients again. This will bring your weight loss to a plateau.

When in starvation mode, your metabolism slows down to a crawl, burning calories as slow as possible in an attempt to conserve energy. This is what leads to people having terrible results in their dieting.

Overeating is a likely result when this happens, due to personal frustration and hunger. People become so dissatisfied with their progress, and their extreme hunger, lead to binge eating.

Finding a reasonable diet and exercise program is the answer to this dilemma. Though weight loss might not be as dramatic in the short term, it is the best way for a sustainable healthy weight, and mental happiness.
